Cool Cities Initiative

Solving Global Warming One City at a Time

The threats of global climate change are now widely recognized as being among the most pressing issues facing us today. Recent statements by the world's scientific community affirm that there is no longer any doubt that human influences and activity play a major role in climate change.

Local governments have stepped forward to take the lead on reducing their operational greenhouse gas emissions. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels signed on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement on February 16th 2005 the same day that the Kyoto Protocol international global warming treaty took effect in 141 nations.

The Cool Cites campaign is a grassroots campaign designed to help citizens encourage their mayors to sign on to the U.S. Mayors climate protection agreement. Townships can make a commitment as well and counties can sign on to the U.S. Cool Counties Climate and Stabilization Declaration.
