Hike Like nature? You could be an outings leader! The Sierra Club Huron Valley Group is accepting new volunteer outings leaders to lead short day-hikes in and around Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti. We will reimburse you for American Red Cross basic first aid training. You will first go on the outing that you choose, and then lead that outing on a later date - or propose your own ideas! Hike Saturday June 13, 2009. First Swimhike of the Year! Hike around Pickerel Lake and through a dry sand prairie and take a dip in the rejuvenating waters of the pristine paradise. Two and a half miles, easy terrain, swimhike led by ace outdoorsman Barry Lonik. Either meet at 1:00 pm in front of Zingerman's Roadhouse (corner of Jackson & Maple, in Westgate shopping center) to car pool or meet at 1:45 pm at the trailhead at the Pickerel Lake parking lot off Hankerd Rd., one mile north of N. Hike Sunday October 21, 2007. Shhhh! It's a secret! Waterloo Recreation Area Hike. Psst! It's a secret -- a secret hike, that is! Join us for a short hike as we explore another corner of the Waterloo Recreation Area with ace outdoorsman Barry Lonik. We'll traverse the mysterious Crooked Lake loop. This moderately-paced hike will cover 4 miles of slightly hilly terrain. Children are welcome. Dress for the weather, and bring some water.
The details: Meet at Ann Arbor City Hall (corner of Fifth and Huron) at 1:00 pm to carpool. Or meet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm: from Ann Arbor, take I-94 west to Kalmbach Road (exit 156), go 3/4 mile north to Cavanaugh Lake Road, go two miles west to Loveland Road, go one mile north to the Crooked Lake access road, go down to the lake, turn left for the boat launch. The State Park entrance fee for each vehicle is $6-daily. The hike is on unless there's a steady rain. All are welcome; no Sierra Club membership required. The hike is free. Hike Sunday April 20, 2008. Brighton Recreation Area Hike -- Penosha trail and optional Kahchin Loop. Penosha is a 5 mile hike over hills and flat areas on a natural dirt trail. We will do the 5 mile hike and then decide whether to do the Kahchin 2 miles. Meet to carpool at the Ann Arbor City Hall/Police Dept. parking lot (corner of Fifth and Huron) at 1:00 pm, or at the Brighton trail head at about 1:40 pm. Parking at the trailhead requires a park pass or $4.00 entrance fee. We will hike in light rain conditions but will cancel if there is a downpour. Bring rain gear just in case, water to drink, and good hiking shoes/boots. The hike is free and newcomers are welcome. Membership is not required. What Michigan Citizens Need to Know about Local Nuclear Power Plants. Michael Keegan, of Don't Waste Michigan, will present the history of the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant, located near Monroe, Michigan, and concerns with the proposed Fermi 3 expansion. Attorney Terry Lodge represents a broad coalition of environmental groups, including Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, working to oppose the Fermi 3 license application. He will review the legal challenges to the Detroit Edison Fermi 3 license application, now under review by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Non-members welcome; refreshments provided.
