> Home > Democracy in Action > Citizen Lobbyists Citizen LobbyistsBecome a District WatchdogFrom the founding of the Sierra Club over 100 years ago, our leaders lobbied elected officials to preserve and protect our environment. Would you like an opportunity to influence the legislative process regarding important environmental issues such as sprawl, trash, air and water pollution, forests, or factory farms? Our Watchdogs play an important role in communicating the message of conservation and environmental protection to Michigan’s legislators. Personal contact with your legislator could make the difference between a vote against the environment and a vote for the environment. How does it work?Sierra Club staff and fellow volunteers are constantly monitoring the legislative process for progress on environmental bills, discussions, and imminent votes. As a district Watchdog, you will receive updates from the Mackinac Chapter on these critical issues, along with ideas on how to best contact your elected officials in Lansing. It is our goal to have at least one Watchdog in each legislative district, making it clear to our elected officials that the Sierra Club and its members are concerned and watchful. What do I have to do?You get to participate actively in the democratic process with the time and energy you have available. Our Watchdogs contact their legislators by mail, phone, e-mail, or in person. Many Watchdogs even write letters to the editor of their local paper. In addition, Watchdogs are invited to take part in Lobby Day, a twice-yearly event when volunteers meet with legislators face-to-face. Communication between Watchdogs and legislators does not have to be detailed, nor will you be required to do lot of research. We’ll provide you with basic background information on the issues, including specific information regarding how the Sierra Club would like to see the legislator vote. Sounds great! How do I sign up?If you’re ready to sign on as a district Watchdog, or if you have additional questions, please call Gayle Miller at (517) 484-2372 or send an e-mail to gayle.miller@sierraclub.org. Thanks for your help!
